Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS)

Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS) is disease to have muscle pain.

Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS) was published at medical book ‘Travell & Simons’ Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual’ by Dr.Janet Travell and Dr.David Simons in 1983.

Normally when leg, lumbar and back muscle got damage due to heavy load such as lifting heavy item and so on, it will be recovered after few days (weeks) rest. However during recovering period, if they got bad blood circulation due to cool or more heavy load again. Muscle cannot be recovered by itself. It will have spasm with kind of lack of oxygen continuously.

When muscle already went this kind of situation, it’s very difficult to stop to spasm. Sometimes it will go to chronic-pain. Point on spasm is called “Trigger Point”. One of complicated things is that not only trigger point has pain but also surrounding point has pain widely due to trigger point.

When people go to hospital due to pain on leg, lumbar, back and so on then they were diagnosed as neuromusculoskeletal condition such as spinal disc herniation, spinal canal stenosis and spondylolisthesis, or as uncertain sick, there is possibility that is different from fact and fact is Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS).
In fact, I was diagnosed as sciatica by lumbar disc herniation. But this was not fact! Fact was Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS).

The symptom for pain of Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS) depends on person. In my case, Pain forced me not to walk. It’s difficult to express about pain. Probably you have gotten a cramp in your leg. Feeling is to have the same pain always. So it was impossible to go daily life.

In USA, nomenclature of ‘Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS)’ was replaced to ‘Chronic Myofascial Pain (CMP)’. Since in Japan, ‘Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS)’ is more popular than ‘Chronic Myofascial Pain (CMP)’, This website uses ‘Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS)’.
